Bohunt’s New Arrivals take to the Stage
Bohunt’s new Year 7s became the stars of the school just before half term as, over three nights, they took to the stage to perform songs from Grease. What made the evenings more amazing was that they were organised and co-ordinated by Bohunt’s talented Year 11s. This involvement of older students was important as it allowed the teachers to concentrate on the hidden aim of the events, which was to gel the new tutor groups together, give the Year 7s a huge confidence boost and make them really feel part of the school.
On each night three to four tutor groups performed; each brought to the stage two creative dance routines, a self-devised piece of drama that regularly had the audience in stitches and songs ranging from Summer Nights to Grease Lightening. Also, the art teachers and their students got the chance to design the retro set, make creative backdrops and give a third dimension to the stage. The live band was staffed by Bohunt’s Year 11s and back stage yet more older students were pulling the strings.
Whilst the tutor groups changed over older students took over and showcased the depth of talent nurtured by Bohunt’s outstanding Expressive Arts Department.
Every night was met with a standing ovation and afterwards, in the newly created Art Exhibition Space, the praise flowed:
- The Year 7s thought that “it was a great experience that really made me feel part of the school” and that “I’d love to do it again and again”.
- One of the audience said it was “entertaining and a real showcase of talents”.
- Mr Strowger, Headteacher of Bohunt School, said that “the evening really shows what outstanding teachers can do when supported by older students willing to take on responsibility and Year 7s who already feel part of the school.”
