Bohunt School Celebrates Record-Breaking GCSE Results

Results day - group waving

Students and staff at Bohunt School in Liphook are today celebrating another fantastic set of GCSE results – and a record set of results under the new system of GCSE grading.

Overall, 81% of students at the school achieved a Grade 4 or better in English and in maths, with a 4 being the grade set by the Government as a pass. This is well above the national average.

With strengths across the board, results in English and maths were particularly impressive, with 90% of students achieving at least a Grade 4 in English and 86% of maths students achieving a Grade 4 or higher.

A fantastic 100% of students achieved a Grade 4 or better in statistics and photography and in sciences, students excelled with an incredible 99% of students taking biology and chemistry gaining Grade 4 or better. The figure for physics was 98% and for philosophy, 96%. In Year 10, 100% of students taking GCSEs achieved grades 9-4 and 81% achieved grades 7-9. Bohunt School’s innovative CLiL programme, which sees Y9 students taking GCSE Mandarin two years early, achieved an incredible 100% grades 9-5 (96% grades 7-9).

These impressive results follow an outstanding set of A Level results last week for Bohunt’s inaugural cohort, which saw students achieving 88% A*-C, making Bohunt the top state provider of further education locally.

There were some outstanding individual success stories:

  • Hesper Aldwinckle, 10 grades at levels 8-9 (the equivalent of 10 grades at A*)
  • Mark McCusker, 9 grades at levels 8-9 (the equivalent of 9 grades at A*)
  • Iris Hamilton, 8 grades at levels 8-9 (the equivalent of 8 grades at A* level)
  • Zander Fitzgerald, 10 grades at levels 7-9 (the equivalent of 10 grades at A/A* level)

Bohunt School is rated Outstanding in every category by Ofsted, and in the last report, inspectors praised the way in which “GCSE results across almost every subject are much higher than those seen nationally”. The report also recognised how much students enjoy learning, and when awarding the School ‘School of the Year’, the Times Educational Subject judges stated, “Bohunt School manages the incredibly difficult trick of excelling across the board, not just academically but in terms of students’ personal development, too.”

Bohunt School is also celebrating the high number of students achieving the EBacc, which is the set of key academic subjects that universities and employers are most impressed by.

Neil Strowger, Headteacher at Bohunt School, said:

“We are thrilled with the results this year, which – coupled with our fantastic first set of A Level results – are a huge achievement. At Bohunt School, we are committed to ensuring the achievement of every student, and we are delighted that our Year 11 students have received these record results, that they so richly deserve. I look forward to seeing many of them continuing their studies in the Sixth Form in September.”

Neil Pittaway, Head of School, said:

“Today’s record-breaking results are fantastic, and students, staff and families of our school should all be incredibly proud. It is testament to the hard work and dedication shown by our students and our excellent team of staff and we wish all our Year 11s the very best in the future.”
