On Wednesday 1st May our Yr 8 students had the opportunity to meet and talk to professionals working in STEM.
We invited professionals who are currently doing research in Biochemistry at the University of Portsmouth, Geologists, Computer scientists and Engineers.
The event was run as a speed networking event where the students had the opportunity to speak to every guest, find out more about what their careers involve and ask questions. At the end of the event, the students wrote down some more of their questions and had the opportunity to ask them these questions in a Q & A style panel.
As students are approaching the time in the school year when they have to choose their paths, many of them asked useful questions related to GCSE and A Level options, including the most popular choice, ” When did you decide what you wanted to do when you were at school?”, “What GCSEs did you take when you were at school and how did that affect your career path?”
Some of our students were interested to find out more in regards to what our guests had recently been working on. One of our guests has worked at the University of Portsmouth, working on engineering a plastic eating enzyme.
The event was a success for our students with many of them learning about different STEM careers, some of which they admitted they hadn’t immediately thought would be engineering, science or technology careers.
We hope to be able to run more events like this in the future.
