What is Service Pupil Premium?

The Department for Education introduced the Service pupil premium (SPP) in April 2011 in recognition of the specific challenges children from service families face and as part of the commitment to delivering the armed forces covenant.

State schools, academies and free schools in England, which have children of service families in school years reception to year 11, can receive the SPP funding. It is designed to assist the school in providing the additional pastoral support that these children may need.

Who is eligible for SPP?

Pupils are eligible for SPP if they meet one of the following criteria:

• one of their parents is serving in the regular armed forces (including pupils with a parent who is on full commitment as part of the full-time reserve service)
• they have been registered as a ‘service child’ on a school census in the past 6 years
• one of their parents died while serving in the armed forces and the pupil receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pensions Scheme
• one of their parents is in the armed forces of another nation and is stationed in England

What is the purpose of the SPP? 

Eligible schools receive SPP mainly so that they can offer pastoral support during challenging times, and to help mitigate the negative impact of family mobility, separation or parental deployment on service children.

• Family mobility: when a service person is posted from one location to another, including overseas and within the UK, resulting in separation from their family or moving of the family home.
• Separation: occurs when a service person is assigned to an unaccompanied location, or the family choose to remain at home when the service person is deployed, resulting in their weekly/monthly commutes home and/or extended periods away.
• Parental deployment: when a service person is serving away from home for a period of time – this could be a 6 to 9-month tour of duty, a training course or an exercise which could last for a few weeks.

How do I apply for SPP?

Children have to be flagged as service children ahead of the autumn school census deadline for the school to receive the funding. However, you can notify us that your child is eligible at any time. Service parents can make the school aware of their status by speaking to reception, their child’s tutor or the student champions at studentchampion@bohunt.sch.uk.

Where can Bohunt forces families go for support?

We want to know how and when your child most needs our support, so please tell us if you are deploying, weekending, or away for long periods of training. To notify us of a change at home, or for anything else, please contact either your child’s tutor, Head of House or our Student Champions: studentchampion@bohunt.hants.sch.uk

What opportunities are available to my Forces Child?

Naval Children’s Charity offer opportunities where young people can come together with other naval children, bond over shared backgrounds and lifestyles, have fun and discover new experiences, some of which may lead on to future careers: https://www.navalchildrenscharity.org.uk/life-chances/

The Royal Naval Sailing Association has a project called Youth Crew, fully funded by Greenwich Hospital and delivered through the Andrew Simpson Foundation.  Youth Crew offers free sailing courses to the Young People, 8-17 of Serving RN, RFA and RM Families.  Weekly and Residential Sailing courses, in 8 locations across the country with the Young People receiving their RYA 1&2 and Swim Safe qualifications.  New for 2025 is Windsurfing courses in specific locations and Improver courses RYA 3&4 for those 2024 Youth Crew returnees. 

Also, back for 2025, is the RNSA Family Days.  Free to serving RN, RFA and RM personnel and their immediate family, Family Days offer valuable time on the water for our serving families to experience Saling and other paddle water sports.  Coming Soon, we also have the RNSA Family Sailing Clubs enabling our RN Families to further their sailing and achieve RYA qualifications.
